    The Other Causes
    As for all the other obstacles to getting adequate sleep, we'll cover them systematically in the following chapters, offering fresh perspective and best solutions.
    In short, the way to take up behavioral impediments is to supplement each one with a better alternative for a trial period of 30 days. After that, chances are, the alternative behaviors will become new habits.
    Too little exposure to sunlight is a very common cause of insomnia, which most people are unaware of. Light regulates melatonin, a brain chemical that is responsible for controlling body temperature. When your body temperature doesn't follow normal rhythms of day and night, you are more likely to have trouble falling asleep. Solution: you need about 1 hour exposure to indirect early morning sunlight and about 15 minutes to direct early morning sunlight.

    Standard techniques not working?
    You probably don't need to relax more than you already do in order to reduce your arousal level in bed. That's why relaxation techniques, herbs or warm milk might not do the trick for you. As a long-term solution, sooner or later ghost-busting actions on a deeper level are needed. Getting rid of one's own gremlins is something that probably takes time to work. For the immediate measures there are complementary sleep-inducing stances that you can adopt, which will reduce the period between the time you hit the sack and enter the dream world:

    • refocus attention from sleep problem to a wake advantage
    • tuning - use the time waiting to fall asleep as the time to tune in with your soul, to connect with the higher power, to get wired to the source of your power - you do it by simply focusing your attention on that higher principle, such as your soul, god, light, or whatever ideal you feel comfortable with. Keep your thoughts around it as long as possible, and that force will nurture you and lull you to sleep when the time is right.
    • set aside some time during the day to think about these things that you normally get the time to think at night
  • Prevention

    To ensure that after curing you don't become a victim of insomnia ever again, there are measures to assist you. The best solution for it is to follow the guidelines presented in our illustrated booklet Quantum Healing, available at no charge. Next, avoiding insomnia is done through these:
    • stay true to yourself by following your heart, aligning your actions with your mission in life
    • keep your bedroom as a sleep sanctuary, reducing all other activities (except for intimate ones) there
    • avoid stimulants in the hours leading up to bedtime, such as caffeine, alcohol, too much food, arguments, television, exercise
    • take up some creative activity, do some arts, let your soul express itself
    • make a habit of doing some relaxation technique every night at least
    • spend more time in nature

You are not just your body, of course. You have other potent sides of your being that you can use as tools in making your way out of insomnia - your mind and heart. If there is one side of your being, which is being underused, then that is what causes imbalance and therefore troubles. Make sure that all your sides are aligned. These three sides of human being are actually three aspects of human soul.

Soul Power
Have you ever wondered if insomnia didn't really happen to you, but that you happened to it? Insomnia is a 4D place you arrive at, when you neglect your soul. Once you acknowledge your soul as the master of your body, heart and mind, then you can easily detach from whatever is harming you on any of those three sides and then easily deal with it. Through your soul reach the goal. Soul is that aspect of a human being that exists in correspondence to the entire universe, namely to God.

Your body, intellect and emotions should serve you, not rule you! Make your body, mind and heart the best employees of your soul, then all your worries and reasons to be insomnious will melt away. You do it by recognition of the soul as your identity and feeding it with the 'soul-food' - see right column. With soul as the captain of your ship, you will gain all the necessary insights and acknowledge enormous potential and power within yourself, instead of looking for that power from external sources.

When the soul suffers, the body cries out in pain, mind is restless, and emotions go bananas. Therefore, it should be our priority in life to nurture our soul as well as body, mind and heart, so that we can stay balanced, in tune with surroundings, and thus healthy and happy.

We are constantly pushed and pulled by our desires and fears that distort our wellbeing. So the pain and pleasure become our puppeteers. To avoid one and gain the other is usually what our lives are all about, sadly enough, since all too often we are suspended like scales between our joys and sorrows, and measure happiness by the proportion of the two. We are free to orient our life around gaining pleasure and avoiding pain, but if we instead choose to embrace our core values and build our lives around them, we will experience revival and joy at an intensity we never thought was possible, where physical and spiritual strength are not at the whim of external forces.

    Some food and drinks stimulate insomnia more than others; that's why if you are serious about hushing yourself to sleep, start by hushing your appetite for stimulants.
    - For example, alcohol and insomnia do not mix. Alcohol is more disruptive to sleep than caffeine! Alcohol might induce sleep, but it also begins to instantly dehydrate body. The result is more frequent waking that stops short of REM (deeper sleep cycles) required for a deep, rejuvenating rest. Also, our body will produce adrenaline to compensate for the alcohol in our system. If you are serious on this journey, we suggest you avoid using alcohol in the evening, instead find other feel-good drinks by experimenting and trying new things. Don't be afraid to say no to the old things and try new ones.
    - everyone knows caffeine is to keep us awake, but not many know all that contain caffeine: coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, colas, energy drinks, over the counter pain medicines. Avoid caffeine for at least 8 hours before bedtime.
    - Give up smoking, because nicotine is a stimulant.
    - Meat of the dead animals you eat contains not only the flesh but the energies too. Their insomnia and anxiety are transferred through eating.
    Natural ways to treat insomnia on physical level:
    • exercise regularly, but not in the last 2 hours before going to bed. Exercise, especially aerobic exercise, has been shown to make people fall asleep faster and get deeper and more restful sleep. Exercise is not a sleeping pill, meaning if you exercise today, you will not necessarily sleep better tonight. Research has shown that fit people sleep better.

    • holistic approaches: meditation; rhythmic breathing technique such as Sudarshan Kriya Yoga taught by the Art of Living Foundation; holistic massage may increase the body's production of painkilling endorphins and the mood-altering hormone serotonin
    • herbal treatment: Valerian Root - the 'valium' of the herbal world. Herbal tea, such as chamomile.
    • essential oils of Lavender, Chamomile, or Clary Sage induce a relaxed state; the soothing scents will calm your senses.
    • check your iron level - iron deficient women tend to have more problems sleeping so if your blood is iron poor, a supplement might help your health and your ability to sleep.
    • eat earlier - at at least three hours before bedtime, but don't go hungry to bed. Eat a light snack before bedtime.
    • Food that helps:
      • foods such as oats, bananas, mangoes, dried dates, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, spirulina, peanuts, soy products, whole grains, beans, rice, humus, and lentils contain a natural sleep inducer called L-tryptophan.
      • celery juice and a teaspoonful of honey
      • a full list of food for sleep

  • emotional and/or spiritual

    if you can't control your emotions, most likely they are controlling you. In order to be in charge of your own self, it takes a mental decision first and then guarding your emotions on a conscious level. There is no point in just accepting that this is the way you are, and that there is nothing you can do about. Because this simply is not true. You can do much about it if you decide to, and if you are convinced. If you believe that you are the captain of your ship, in other words that you are the one calling the shots, then do something about these emotional gremlins that attack you. Sometimes a simple act of deciding it does the trick, while at other times other methods help more, like visualization, meditation, EFT technique, Sedona method... They are further explored in the 'E-pills' section of this page.
    The ultimate question is not how to keep away from worry, grief, excitement, and other "sleep thieves", but how each of us are handling that. The impact of those sleep-obstructing emotions is reduced to minimum if you think of yourself as an ocean that can contain anything, as opposed to a cap. In truth, we can take in all the dirt from outside world, feel all the emotions, and still not be ruffled, as long as we keep reminding ourselves that our hearts are bigger than an ocean, and our consciousness infinite. There is no truth truer than that. We can feel and perceive anything and still be undisturbed and composed. We just have to learn how. By the end of this page, you'll know how.
    • To start with, by all means, avoid emotional upset or stressful situations before bedtime. Easier said than done, we know. It's also easier done than thought. If you can think it, you can achieve it - it's a message from many of the enlightened souls across the planet and ages. Sometimes just deciding it consciously makes it happen, sometimes a little extra time-management is required, and sometimes it requires self-discipline. It's all a picnic once you fully recognize the necessity of winning the war on insomnia, or bringing more rest to your life. Rewards are on all levels - health, relationships and prosperity.
    • Write down your worries and possible solutions before you go to bed. Get them out of your system and on paper. This allows you to see your 'concerns' in writing. This brings you one step closer to disarming your worries. Worrying about falling asleep actually keeps many people awake.
    • Detachment - whenever an emotion arises that is interrupting with your sleep, it takes a counter-action to dissolve its impact. You can feel your feelings, but they don't need to disturb you. Feel it, and then let it go. Find a way to detach yourself from it. See yourself as a soul that embraces that feeling and lets it go. When soul is in control, emotions obey. There are plenty of techniques to help you with the release of emotional burdens, we'll come to that in the coming chapter called 'E-pills'
  • mental or psychological

    To counter any disorder it's crucial to win it in the mind. If you can win there, you can win everywhere. A bit of mind-control is all it takes to win in life, as with anything so with curing insomnia too. We have solutions for mind-self-control: take the e-pills listed in the next chapter.     Natural solutions:
    • set aside some time during the day to think about these things that you normally get the time to think at night
    • before going to bed write a journal or "to do" list - it may be very helpful in letting you put away concerns and organize your mind in order to make tomorrow easier
    • look on the bright side - you have the amazing ability to stay awake at night, something which millions of others would love to trade with you. Through this ability you have a chance to use that time to tune in with your soul, or with God, or with Higher Power, or whatever Force you esteem as most valuable. In doing that you will become more healthy, more wealthy and moore in tune with the universe. You'll attract answers, solutions and opportunities more easier when you are in sync with your nature, your higher power.
      No matter how bad things have become for you, there is always something in your life that is still positive, even if it is something small. It still matters. Everything that is good in life matters. Focus on what's good in your life instead of what's bad. List all the good things you are grateful for every morning, and see how this outlook makes the list grow with every new day.
    • if your mind is worrying about not being able to fall asleep, get off the subject altogether - don't keep looking at the clock, tune in with your soul

As souls, we are not limited to our minds, but it’s our minds that mostly dictate our destinies. If we can only control our minds, instead of minds controlling us everything would be just fine. The mind is just a tool of our souls, but it can be a tool that destroys us as much as a tool to help us. We take a pick.

Adopt the attitude towards life and world that allows you more pacific outlook, which involves considering the negativity to be a vital resistance needed for the growth of your soul-muscles. That attitude creates the sense of gratification, because you owe mainly to the negativities for your strength and growth. You needed them to develop and cultivate your qualities, and that is why you could even look forward encountering them, rather than being intimidated by them.

It’s like building up our physical strength in gym. We need those weights as resistance to keep fit. Well, those weights are just like problems. Instead of pursuing to exterminate your problems, swap the mode and learn to make use of them. There is always a threat that they might harm you; that is why you need to charm them somehow, like a snake charmer. For that, you need to familiarize with them instead of maintaining the usual animosity.

Get additionally inspired by a billboard advertising some yoga class. It reads: ‘You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf’. Learn how to surf the waves, charm the dragons, tame the gremlins, swim with sharks - embrace the problems and down-times as children that needs care.

 Cutting a diamond 

A kilo of diamonds is worth thousand times more than a kilo of gold. What tips the scales and defines its worth is its brilliance and durability, which in turn are determined by how is diamond cut. The proportions of width and depth have a large impact on diamond brilliance, in the same metaphorical way they have an impact on human brilliance. Polish and symmetry (smoothness and alignment of the facets) are two important aspects of the cut. Diamond's character is a result of a cutting & polishing process, just like with humans. What is symmetry to diamonds, to us is balance. Balance of all our facets - body, mind and heart. Soul is meant to balance our physical, mental and emotional qualities. For soul to be able to do that it has to be allowed to be a master. Giving too much power to intellect, or getting carried away with emotions, or putting too much weight on physical abilities, it prevents your soul to manifest itself.

If you don't shine just yet it's because you're a diamond in the rough. Your brilliant sparkle doesn't come through if any of those three aspects of your being are in disproportion to the other two. There is a process to make a raw material into a real gem. That's where refining falls into play.

It's done through reprogramming your mind, mind acupuncture, subconscious cleansing, releasing resistance, owning your emotions, heart's artistic pacemaker, body-unbuilding workout, faith-lift, fine tuning to your soul, and expanding your limitations (links coming soon), to name a few. It's mostly done through taking so-called e-pills, which will be given to you further down the page.

They all come down to digging in your depth and widening your horizons. Our almighty minds can impair us or repair us, bring us down or bring us up. The choice is ours, only ours. You can let others shape you by default or you can do it yourself; it's still your choice. We can choose to be bitter or better, a victim or a victor.

Insomnia happens when you are at odds with yourself, when you are disconnected from the source of your joy, from the source of your power - like any great electrical instrument not attached to electricity. All this potential just sitting there - plug it in and all is swell. If your life is not as it should be, there is a simple reason for it: you are not in sync with the nature, with the universe. In other words, you are disconnected from the source of your power. How you got disconnected doesn't really matter, it might not even be your fault. What matters is what you do about it - whether you reconnect or not.

Ever saw a branch detached from its tree growing fruit? Didn't think so. The same, we too can't blossom as long as we are separate from our soul.
On the surface, we might get by fine, but it won't take us all the way. Some aspects of life might seem to boom, but not for long. Anyway, what's the use if one aspect is doing well, when all others are not in order. What’s it to ya having all the wealth in the world, when insomnia is eating you from inside.
No, you've got to have it all, and this is your way to do it - polish up all the sides of your being so that light can shine through you and make you brilliant.

How does one reconnect then. Different strokes for different folks. Some might use their religion or spirituality to provide them with ways or rituals to do so. In such cases just full-heartedly focusing on God or Higher Power through prayer or meditation does the job if done long enough.
If this is not an option for you than put all your attention to the highest ideal and draw power from it. It could be love, truth or any other high concept as well as an incorporated ideal in a hero or role-model.

There is another great way to reconnect with our higher source and make a brilliant being (as diamond) out of us (achieving balance of all our facets - body, mind and spirit), especially if you are not into prayers and meditation. And that is art, of course. Art is an instrument of getting in touch with our soul, means to freeing our soul. As the whole point is to empower your soul, then it makes sense to make use of arts, either by creating it or just consuming it.
The way to go about is to find your fit and engross in it with the intention to nourish your soul.

There is no project like the one with 'Lullaby' in all my music-producing career that has had such a strong impact on me. During the makings of the lullaby, I was totally hypnotized into sleep. The sounds were so powerful in lulling me that I couldn't help but drift to sleep during the actual producing hours.

Alternative:
Listening to the sounds of nature, such as ocean waves or the calm of a deep forest, can also reduce insomnia. The ultimate relaxation music is the 60 beat per minute music.

 
 
 

Room acupuncture

Your third skin - your home - is as important as your first and second skin (clothes). It's responsible for your moods, for your feeling good or bad. Your eyes are constantly feeding with the images that surround you.

If you have stimulating colors & images, and generally mess in your bedroom, then it's not doing you any good. It might as well be the reason for your insomnia. It's one of those things most people know nothing about, but luckily you are not one of them any more.

Turn your bedroom into a sleep sanctuary. On the bedroom walls hang only the kind of pictures or objects that relax you, calm you down. Avoid colors and images that lift you up, use the cooling, calming ones: blue, turquoise, purple, indigo and violet. Note that purple also decreases sexual desire, so if you want more action in sex department, skip this color.

When the lights go off and you expect to fall asleep, the effects of colors and images you exposed yourself in the hours leading to bedtime will still be with you. Even if the bedroom is pitch dark, as it should be, once you are in bed, the last visuals will stay with you for a while.

Block out light. To increase the quality of your sleep, research has shown that by blocking out light in your bedroom, you can improve your sleep pattern. If you can see your hand in front of your face, after the lights are off, then it is light enough to affect melatonin production. Melatonin is a hormone secreted at night by the pineal gland. The pineal gland is a small organ in the brain sensitive to light levels.

Use the bedroom for bedroom activities only. Your bedroom should be the place for rejuvenation and intimacy — no more, no less.

Feng Shui Tips

Feng shui cannot replace healing modalities. It can, however, augment them. A thorough feng shui assessment of your home and modifications implemented can do wonders for your insomnia. Here are some guidelines to put insomnia at bay:

Make sure your bed is large enough and comfortable. If you are disturbed by a restless bedmate, switch to a queen or king-size bed. Test different types of mattresses. Try therapeutic shaped foam pillows that cradle your neck or extra pillows that help you sleep on your side. Get comfortable cotton sheets. Make your bedroom primarily a place for sleeping. It is not a good idea to use your bed for paying bills, doing work... Help your body recognize that this is a place for rest or intimacy.

Keep your bedroom peaceful and comfortable. Make sure your room is well ventilated and the temperature consistent. Try to keep it quiet. You could use a fan or a "white noise" machine to help block outside noises.

Hide your clock. A big, illuminated digital clock may cause you to focus on the time and make you feel stressed and anxious. Place your clock so you can't see the time when you are in bed.

Avoid sleeping with your head towards the door. The proper position in which to have the bed and to sleep is in such a place that allows you to see the door but without being right across from it. This way, you should always avoid sleeping with your feet right in front of the entrance.

Avoid sleeping under a window. Sleeping under a window would have a bad impact on your vital energy, as well as it might cause you to loose some of your positive energy by dispersing it. If you can't avoid sleeping under a window, then you should hang a curtain on the window.

Avoid having pictures of water or fountains in the bedroom. Keeping a fountain or pictures of water in the bedroom can cause insomnia as well as attract bad luck to those who sleep in the room.

Avoid any sharp edges or corners pointing towards the bed. For example, a desk corner, which points towards the place where you sleep. If you find any and you can't get rid of them, you can neutralize its bad effect by covering it or by placing a plant in front of it.

Remove all electronic devices in the bedroom, such as telephones, televisions, computers and clock radios, which emit powerful electromagnetic fields that interfere with sleep and depress immunity.

Clear away clutter of any kind, including under your bed and in the closet. Even if they’re not in plain view, areas of clutter block energy flow like cholesterol clogs arteries.

Hang a crystal in the center of your bedroom - 40 to 50-millimeter round and faceted crystal hanging from a 9-inch red string (the center of any room is the health area). Crystals amplify chi, but natural gems like amethyst, garnet or quartz come with their own energetic frequency so choose a synthetic stone that you can program with your healing intention.

Here is the list of all the do's on your path to recovery:

  • believe that you can heal yourself and decide to do it
  • dig in and find the core cause of your insomnia and decide there is something more important than that and let it go - or change that what causes insomnia
  • read Quantum Healing at your leisure
  • find meaning in life
  • balance your body, intellect and emotions in service of your soul
  • re-examine your beliefs, particularly about how many hours of sleep you need and on advantages of being awake at night
  • look on the bright side, focus on what's good in your life instead of what's bad - every morning make a list of all the good things you are grateful for
  • exercise in daytime- keep fit
  • adopt each sleep-inducing behavior for a trial period of 30 days. If they make a difference make it a habit by continuing it.
    • avoid stimulants in the hours leading up to bedtime, such as caffeine, alcohol, too much food, arguments, television, exercise
    • increase consumption of foods rich in amino acid tryptophan: soy products, whole grains, beans, rice, humus, lentils, hazelnuts, peanuts, chickpeas, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame
    • make a habit of doing some relaxation technique every night at least
    • avoid emotional upset or stressful situations before bedtime
    • do the breathing exercises, and/or yoga
    • set aside some time during the day to think about these things that you normally get the time to think at night
    • try NOT to sleep and see if it is works
    • don't take long naps in the afternoons
  • take up some creative activity, do some arts, let your soul express itself
  • spend more time in nature
  • rearrange your bedroom to meet your sleeping needs, make sure the colors are right (blue, turquoise, purple, indigo and violet), the clock is not in sight, no pictures of water
  • go for total darkness in the bedroom
  • keep your bedroom as a sleep sanctuary, reducing all other activities (except for intimate ones) in there
  • use the time in bed to reconnect with the source of your power - be it God or a high ideal. Tune in with your soul.
  • read undemanding, soothing stories before bed, not in bed
  • write down your worries and possible solutions before you go to bed. Make a 'to do' list for the next day, so that you don't dwell on it in bed
  • listen to the audio-sedative before going to bed
  • take the e-pills: visualize peace and relaxation, use proper affirmations, let insomnia go with Sedona method or EFT
  • be generous, be grateful and be free
